So today I started my summer morning rides bright and early.  I had to get up just before 5 am to be at the barn and on by 6 am.

Strangely enough it didn't feel too early at the time, although I'm super tired now (14 hours later).  I think the early morning rides are going to be great -- get a ride or two in before the heat really starts, rush to work, and then have the evening free for non-horsey pursuits (like going to bed early).

It's probably unrealistic to expect to have great "aha" moments every ride, and certainly not after a few days off.  Today was a super fun ride though because we worked on piaffe (yep!).  To anyone reading this, keep in mind that I'm leasing a schoolmaster and working daily with an instructor.  So, that in and off itself was a great reward for getting up early.  I don't delude myself into thinking I could do the piaffe on my own (yet!) but it is really a blast to be able to ride a horse that really knows what he's doing and to have the great opportunity to ride regularly with a trainer.

In keeping with the thread from yesterday's post, the moments of optimal experience and "flow" occur as a result of regular practice and stretching one's limits.  As I set my clock to just before 5 am again, I'll remind myself that the challenge and goal to improve will definitely be worth it.

Happy riding!
